A young man and his professor were walking along a path one day when they chanced upon the shoes of a farmer working in the fields.
The young man wanted to play a prank on the farmer and said to his professor, "Let's hide these shoes and hide behind the tree over there, then we'll wait and see the expression of the farmer when he returns! It will be fun!"
The professor replied, "My dear friend, never make fun of the plight of the poor. For you are rich, try instead another trick. Place a coin in each of these shoes and then we'll hide and take a look at the poor man's expression."
The young man did as he was told and placed a coin in each shoe.
A few minutes later, the farmer ended work and came to retrieve his shoes. Upon slipping on the first, he was surprised to find something hard in it. He took out his foot and found the coin inside. He was perplexed and looked all around, but seeing no one, he put the shoe back on and started to put on the other one.
When he once again felt something in his other shoe and upon finding that it was another coin, the man immediately knelt on the path and uttered a fervent prayer of thanks to the provider who had given him this much needed bounty, as his wife was ill and his child in need of food.
Seeing the joy of the poor man upon finding the coins that did not cost much to him, the young man felt tears welling in his eyes and said softly, "I understand now, how actions that mean little to us may make a world of difference to someone else.
We should always put some thought into what we do. It is indeed more blessed to give than to receive!"
